The 1Lib1Ref (One Librarian, One Reference) campaign invites librarians and other information professionals, as well as the general public to improve Wikipedia by adding missing references to the open encyclopedia's articles.[1]

Background

History & Impact

The initiative launched in January 2016 to coincide with Wikipedia's 15th anniversary. The initial event ran from January 15 to January 23, 2016, and saw participants from around the world making at least 1,200 edits in nine languages.[2] Since its first run, the initiative has gained great momentum. The 2024 1Lib1Ref campaign has demonstrated significant global impact. 465 editors in 26 regional programs across the globe added over 14,200 references to Wikipedia articles in multiple languages.[3]

Organization

1Lib1Ref is a WikiMedia campaign organized by The Wikipedia Library. Libraries and library stakeholders worldwide are invited to support the coordination of the event by promoting it among their professional networks and audiences.

Frequency

1Lib1Ref has two active phases per year. The first phase runs from January 15th to February 5th and the second one from May 15th to June 5th.

Tracking Participation

The campaign uses the tag #1Lib1Ref to track participation across Wikipedia sites and on social media platforms.

How It Works

Getting Started

  1. Log in or create a Wikipedia account
  2. Find an article needing a citation (use Citation Hunt or this guide
  3. Add a reference from a reliable source (make sure to follow Wikipedia's style conventions).
  4. Include #1Lib1Ref in your edit summary.
  5. Share your contribution on social media, if you like, using the same tag #1Lib1Ref.
