Project Description
Project Character
A school seismometer network and community science program run by seismologists at the University of Victoria and the Geological Survey of Canada, in partnership with the Hakai Institute
Methodology
- A network of miniaturized seismometers placed in elementary and high schools and incorporated into the curriculum as tool to learn about earthquakes and tectonics
- Each participating school receives a miniaturized Raspberry Shake (RS) seismometer with live seismometer feeds and related educational tools
- Real-time waveforms from all Raspberry Shakes in the network and nearby national seismic stations, together with epicenters of local earthquakes as they are detected and located, are illustrated on a simple web interface available to schools and the general public
Purpose
- Help British Columbia communities better prepare for big-scale earthquakes, as that Canadian province is a high-risk area for these events
- Support science education in local schools
Project Publications
Research publications and educational materials available through the SchoolShake website and Teacher Resources section.
