Project Description
- A crowd-sourced, ocean science observation game in which volunteers help analyze deep-sea videos – 60 seconds at a time (no experience required!)
- Volunteers watch short 60-second segments of video and describe what they see by selecting from fields including: sea life, water clarity, seafloor composition, and any other objects
- More than 500 volunteers from around the world helped to view deep-sea video samples from the observatory in Barkley Canyon and to estimate numbers of sablefish
- The Barkley Canyon videos are part of a larger research project looking at the influence of food supply on species abundance and diversity at the ocean floor
- Studies have shown that citizen scientists can be called upon to help experts analyze vast amounts of data generated by the observatories
- Uses underwater cameras from Ocean Networks Canada's subsea network across the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic coasts
